I bought my first BMW - and my first diesel engined car last year - an E91 318d M sport Touring. We love the car but after 5000 miles I see the engine oil is really black yet the service indicator and schedule shows first service and change after due after 15k miles next summer! Can this be correct? I've always thought that diesel engined cars need regular oil changes to keep them in good shape. Anyone got any experience to share please?

To be honest you need to do more frequent oil changes than what the service shedule indicates.

If it was my car I would be changing the oil and filter every 7-9000 miles.

As above...

ALL diesels' engine oil "blackens" within a very short time

I change oil and filers very regularly.

Decent quality 5ltr bottle of oil from Hellfords (sometimes comes with free screwdrivers, owww ^_^ ) = £18ish
Oil filter from Eurocarparts = £5ish
Bosch Super4 plugs from Eurocarparts = £2.50ish each
AirFilter from Eurocarparts = £8ish (£30 from ebay and Never buy one again! :D )
Personal time = Half hour? If that?...

Good times B)

Thanks for the feedback Guys. You have confirmed my gut feeling! Looks like an oil and filter change next weekend!
