Year 2000 328 Ci Thermostat Problem.

Please try to help with some advice and/or previous experiences of this problem. For 3 or 4 days now, my 328 has been running only just out of the blue zone on the temp guage, and the heater has been only just warm, no matter what temp you set on the display. I am guessing its the thermostat, so thats the first question, would you agree with that? The second question is, my techi buddy who I act as oily rag for, says that there are two thermostat choices, a BMW one and a non-original, and one is about £90 and the other about £75. Wow! is that right? Is it not just a simple £12 type jobbie, is it in a special housing or something? Help please guys!

Early M52 2.8 engines with Single Vanos (E36): Thermo-housing and Thermostat separate

Later M52 2.8 engines with Double Vanos (E46): Thermo-housing and Thermostat integrated into the same part

Both are the same engine but, different cylinder head casts

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, Daz, that'll be it then, mines a E46, so I'm gonna have to take it like a man, no simple little thermostat only for me then. I just hope thats what it is! Spend £90 and it turns out to be something else!

.....Test it.

Submerge it in a saucepan of boiling water. If it's closed when you remove it (as it should be) then it's probably okay but still, saucepan of boiling water.
