Another Scot Joining The Ranks

Hi all,

Just picked up my first BMW last week, a 2010 320i M Sport and I love it!

It's got the 18" Msport wheels so I might need some advice on run flats / other tyres, I suspect this has been discussed on the forum before. :-)

plenty of info about runflat tyres etc. just makesure you got backup if you go for non runflat tyres ;)

A warm welcome, John. Yes, Dilly is right, you'll find previous discussions about run flats. The general consensus is that they are a money making gimmick, but there are issues if they have been fitted as standard from new. My personal issue is, I've been driving for 40 years and in that time have suffered what I would term a breakdown puncture on THREE occasions. One every 13 years or so. Do you really need to spend a fortune to avoid this tiny risk?

Woody, I'm thinking of running normals with a couple of tins of tyre weld in the boot, read a few mixed reviews about the various tyre welds, but got to be worth a punt, worse case scenario green flag have to tow me home

Sound. I bought 3 of the simple plug into cig lighter and the can into the valve and switch on type kits years ago. Have one each in mine, wife and daughters cars. Not used yet, probably will one day, I guess. Only minus to remember is once used on punctured tyre to get you home, the tyre is not repairable.

Welcome to the BMWOC, Andy. Get rid of the run flats. Originally I used tyre weld, first puncture and it didn't work, so I have a full size spare, its a bugger if you need the boot space. I used a space saver on my mondeo and didn't like how it drove

Here's why you don't want Run Flat tyres. Had to change one on wife's car this morning £267 but got it down to £225, from a BMW dealer (didn't want to risk damage to the rim). I had to change one when I had a 1'er again £250. They just seem to be more prone to punctures than ordinary tyres. Glad I haven't got them on the M

I've read that run flats are quite prone to punctures with pot holes etc. maybe people just notice it more because the experience is a bit more painful on the pocket!
