Hi guys i have a whistling/squealing noise coming from my engine plus a bit of a water leak, i've been told it's the water pump so looking at replacing it. Does anyone have any idea what these pumps are like? somebody recommended me this as the internals are metal instead of plastic? just don't want it to be noisy at all and be reliable:

yes i saw that one too Bruce i was just worried about the price of it being so cheap! i don't want to drop on quality but a water pump supplied from BMW is £270+VAT the one i mentioned was £115 which has metal internals instead of BMW's plastic wanted to know if anyone had had any experience with them they seem to be of good quality... or do i just go with BMW's own?...

Hi Rickie,

I can only really give experiance from my own experiances, not with your engine i'm afraid.

My M50 (in my blue e28) has a plastic impeller. When I rebuilt the engine, it was broken up and I literally had to PULL it from the engine. Since then, I have said I will only use metal impellers and the BMW genuine ones are plastic so.... i prefer aftermarket. I have after markets in my cars now and I'm happy with that.

Hi Daz, thankyou really appreciate the reply, i would normally only want to purchase genuine parts with the engine being so sensitive but as you explained i thought the metal impeller would be a better alternative to what is there now.

Think i will attempt to go for this unless i get a reason not to, i will let you know the outcome as at the moment the noise from the pump from a cold start is unbearable!!! let alone having to top up the water every day.

I think your best taking Daz's advice. I'm aware of other manufacturers using plastic impellers which are a weak point.
