Cost for replacing battery

My 2011 3-series needs a new battery. I took it to the local BMW dealer (USA) and they said, grandly, that it would be US$500 (about 350 British Pounds!) Shocking. When I probed I was told that the battery is not an especially costly part, it's the installation that's so costly. Because they have to "register the battery with all the various components of the car, and if you don't do that the car won't run right." When I asked further what would happen if I went to a non-dealer who worked on foreign cars, they said that this could be done but it the car would have some unspecified problems. Is this a lot of nonsense or can someone confirm this? Thanks!

      Electrical issue

      Morning Gary Welcome to the Forum Even a relativley new battery can die fully charge the battery (make sure you use the charge points under the bonnet) measure the voltage engine off key out at the charge points it should read 12.5 to 12.8v below 12v is either dying battery or a dead short somewhere. Once battery is at full charge engine running measure again you shouls see 14.8v indicating a healthy alternator. Engine off key out let the car go to sleep (takes up to 10 mins) then measure amperage at the under bonnet charge points you should se a few milliamps (clock, memory items etc) if your seeing higher you have a paracitic drain which will need tracking down. Check the starter motor a failing one can kill a battery really fast Hope this helps Dave

      Electrical issue

      Hi, I have a strange issue on my 2013 2.o diesel X1. It has been runniing fine for years until today when we tried to start it was dead. Tonight i jumped it straight away but now when you start it the lights are on all the time but the windows dash lights and other electrical functions do not work . Now I have run it round the block the battery which is only 6 months old it starts the engine no problem. Any ideas ? could it be an emergency get you home mode as the lights work

      BMW 318i boot locked can’t get into

      Hi, open the bonnet and use the charging points in there. Put the charger on and the boot should open using the fob. also, I have seen cars getting enough power from connecting an external battery/ car to the cigarette lighter, if you have one?
