An important safety issue was brought to my attention recently in my X5. As I was driving it, the ignition suddenly turned off, with all the consequence: brakes and steering wheels becoming tough.

Later my mechanic told me that the computer board, the "DME" had gotten damaged and needed replacement. This is ok, damaged part needs to be replaced. But for a car to turn off (A 2011 X5 3.5i) in the middle of the road was baffling.

My problem: THERE WAS NO WARNING.  what if the ignition turned off while i was on a mountain road crossing a vehicle with incoming traffic? this had never happened to me before in any other vehicule i owned. I wonder about anyone's experience. Is this normal? did anyone experience ignition turn off while driving? is there an underlying problem that caused this?
