Hi all, recently purchased a Project, 2002 X5 LPG to play with! Good this Retirement.

Can someone help with a LPG question? The Tank is where the Spare Wheel sits and the Battery is below this, I think! I need to replace the Front Door Handle and “slightly” concerned about the Air Bag behind the Door Panel when I remove it.  I don’t want to spoil my good looks by it exploding in my face!

i know you SHOULD disconnect the Battery but I can’t obviously get access to it with the Tank there. Help!

Hi Martin

Welcome to the Forum

Which engine V8 or Straight 6? Clever putting the battery underneath everything isn't it makes it a mission even without the LPG tank. The door handle carrier is a known PITA if that is what your changing, many have found the cheap ebay items inferior and end up changing more than once. I brought mine for my 4.4 with LPG from BMW when I changed the carrier I un bolted the airbag and suspended it out of the way and could complete all the work with out disconnecting anything just be careful. It also meant that I didn't have to reset any warning lights. I used www.pelicanparts.com as they have some great "how too's" with pictures just remember it's an American site so they have the steering on the wrong side.

Hi Dave, thank you for the welcome. I’m afraid it’s the Hairdresser’s straight 6 Petrol, still performance was not my main aim! I have seen a couple of Posts saying they did exactly how you did it and no BANGS so I’ll give it a go later. Thanks again

Hi Martin

The straight 6 may be down a few horse power but it is the stronger engine long term, due to the V8's habit of shredding its plastic chain guides.

If you aren't aware www.realoem.com is a BMW online parts list with small exploded drawing show where bits go. Just put the last 7 digits of your Vin in the search box it will bring up your model.

www.newtis.info is a BMW technical information site, the same information that Dealers use.

Enjoy your X5

Dave
