Drive Train

I have a series 1 and a few months ago the drive train light came up. We took it to BMW dealership and they said it could be the clutch. They wanted us to pay £600 to investigate as I think they had to remove the engine or something. If it was  the clutch that needed replacing we had to pay the full amount as not on warranty. However, if it turned out to be something that was covered on warranty we wouldn't need to pay the £600 and parts. The Car is only 3 years old with 42000 miles. We are leasing it and its due to go back in 3 months. However, can't return it with the dash light on. Going to cost us a lot of money but unsure what to do. Has anyone else had problems with 2017 drive train / clutch problems. My husband and I are in our 40s and don't drive mad, and also never had an issue with wearing the clutch out early before.

3 yrs old an only 42000 miles, it shouldnt be the clutch. People have been know to destroy a clutch in an afternoon but you have to be damm brutal with it.

If the car drives ok and you can change gear as necessary then it could be a weird electrical issue.

Try taking it to a BMW specialist rather than the main dealer. A BMW diagnostics check is a lot cheaper than a clutch investigation.

I agree with John, I would be suspicious of the Dealer. There is a BMW Specialist Register (Google is your friend) take a look and find one near you.

A "Drive Train" warning can be triggered by many things other than the drive train. You don't say which model or engine but if petrol Coil Packs and or Spark plugs are known to fail and will trigger the warning. As will fuel pump issues (petrol and diesel), low oil levels (engine and/or gearbox) low coolant level causing over heating.

So as John says talk to a BMW Specialist they will have the experience and knowledge to offer constructive advice

Thank you for your replies. It was the main BMW showroom where we are leasing it from. Gears do change ok but due to the drive train being on it doesn't drive great at the moment doesn't have a good acceleration. Neither my husband or I know much about cars but we thought the clutch going was unusual at this low mileage. been driving for 25 years and never had this problem before. Will go to a local specialist and see what they say. Just annoying we have to hand it back in 3 months and to pay out large amounts of money seems a waste.

Hi Claire

When the "Drive Train" warning is active it will restrict engine performance to prevent damage as advised a second opinion is the answer. A diagnostic session will identify the issue
