Good Morning All

Have recently inherited a non running 116D with N4720DC engine that initially thought timing chain had failed

After removing and dismantling found the chain/guides were in good order but when the head was removed the problem presented itself

One of the piston crowns had melted and part of a valve had become fused creating a molten sculpture

Further inspection revealed that the respective liner had escaped any damage and was again in great order

Can the wider audience highlight if this is an anomaly or another one of the idiosyncrasies of the series?

Additionally the cylinder head was damaged and rendered u/s that will require replacing

It is a 79768 08 but could it be replaced with an 07 or are the heads non interchangeable

These are the images of the findings

Hope to hear from the group in due course

Kind Regards

Terry

Morning Terry

Welcome to the Forum

Wow that made a mess, I have seen similar damage on a 2.0d Peugeot engine (friend of our sons) a piece of glow plug broke off when he changed them, He said he didn't notice? I think the broken bit got wedged in the exhaust vale the result looked similar to yours.

If you aren't aware take a look at www.realoem.com It is an online BMW Parts List put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will bring up your model. Then search the section you need. Once you have the section up double click the part number you want and you will get a list showing alternate part numbers and models it was used in.

You look like you know what your about with a spanner just make sure new head bolts are used. I would also check water pump and change the timing chain and guides as your that far in.

Good job so far

Afternoon Dave

Hope your well - we have now completed the one series which has received a new lease of life with some TLC

Have now purchased E39 525d tourer that’s required a little work to the engine but unfortunately unable to locate any workshop manual for the vehicle

Is it possible you could point us in the right direction as to where we can purchase such an item please

Appreciate your assistance in advance

Sadly BMW used to allow access to their TIS (technical information system) but a couple of years ago made it subscription only. There are 2 sources in the USA Bentley Manuals but being USA tend to be petrol based, and Pelican Parts these guys have some great online "how to Articles" complete with pictures again mainly petrol based.

If you get a copy INPA/ISTA it has the technical information included with it just I am not sure if you can update it anymore but for older models obviously that isn't an issue. Plus of course www.realoem.com
