Hello -

Time for a new car. Looking at the 6 Series Convertibles.  I'm nervous about owning a luxury car outside of warranty. Any advice on selecting a model? Should i even be considering ine in the first place?  I do all my own maintenance on my existing vehicle - up to and including putting a new transmission in. But part of the reason i'm getting a new car is that i'm tired of spending one or two weekends a month.  i'm looking for something dependable that won't be in constant need of maintenance.

i am looking at a 2010 M6 and a 2elf. 012 650i  both RWD  and convertibles

I was originally shopping for Audi R6 as i much preferred the R4 i owned over a 3 Series...but now that i'm getting bigger and want a bigger ride, the 6 Series is so much more fun than the R5, but also more expensive. Should i buy one? are they dependable? can i do any of the maintenance or repairs myself?

Your opinions would be appreciated.

Hi Mike

Welcome to the Forum

What a hard choice first the Maintenance/Reliability issue when my X5 came to the end of it's manufacturers warranty I could have extended it with BMW (expensive) so I took an after market Warranty there are loads to choose from which has protected me against big bills until it's 18th birthday. Both I and the X5 have matured together like a fine wine 😂 I do like tinkering one of my hobbies, so I have a full diagnostic suite on an old lap top and can carry out any work with the same knowledge as the main dealer. I run a scan once a month at least and if there is an issue that needs attention I deal with it (I have a couple of younger bendier sons) if it means crawling underneath.

If it is something beyond my capabilities or I just don't have the time I use a BMW Specialist who is (a) local (b) less than half BMW cost. Doesn't happen very often.

As for which to choose bearing in mind I am not a two door or convertible fan M6 all the way, under 4.5 secs to 62mph limited 155mph ( 190 with the limiter lifted) The 650i is basically the same engine with less go. Both are lovely cars though tough choice

What ever the choice ENJOY

Hi Mike,

I dont know if your capable of carrying out the maintenance yourself as I dont know your skill level but if you did it on your previous cars then there is no reason you couldnt do it on a 6 series. These are a luxury machine so the costs of getting someone else to work on it will be more than a Corolla but Corolla's dont have the same level of tech in them and therefore there are more components that have the possibility to go wrong. Also a Corolla will not drive the same way as a BMW. And as a guy once said to me "if you want the horses you have to pay for the hey".

Are they dependable? yeah they usually are, obviously they have occasional faults and you should look on bmw forums to see what they are before buying one but you will notice they are not too bad really once you find one with a good service history and maintain it well.

My advice would be get some BMW specific software like ISTA+ and learn from the forums how to use it as it will save you a lot of money if you do end up with any issues. Buy the car and gain the experience and enjoy it. Besides, its only money 😁
