Hi all.  I recently bought a 530D F10 (2013) with just over 100k on the clock. It came with a 3rd party warranty that insists that servicing is kept up to date in accordance with the manafacturer schedule.

However, I'm at a loss as to what the correct servicing procedure is for the vehicle. BMW tell me it is condition based servicing and the car will decide when a service is due. Is this correct? IE: It isn't every x months or so many 1000 miles (whichever comes first) ?

The last service in the iDrive was at 97k in September 2020 by a BMW specialist.

The car (and the Cardata report) is telling me that it is next due in 17000 miles in September 2022 !

I asked the warranty company and they said they have no idea (not helpful at all).

Any ideas would be much appreciated as I don't want to fork out £450 for a service if it doesn't need it.

Car is currently on 101457 miles. This is the servicing that has been done so far in iDrive - Is this all up to date as far as the BMW schedule goes (and if not why is the car telling me the next service is in 17k or 2022) ?

7/10/2014 - 14972 - Engine Oil - Microfilter

8/7/2016 - 40941 - Engine Oil - Microfilter - Brake Fluid

6/9/2017 - 44210 - Front Brake Pads

20/7/2018 - 61111 - Engine Oil - Microfilter - Air cleaner element - Fuel filter - Brake fluid - Vehicle check

23/5/2019 - 82671 - Engine Oil - Microfilter

2/9/2020 - 97235 - Brake Fluid - Rear Brake Pads

12/8/2021 - 10500 - Engine Oil (This one is not in iDrive but is in service book - the dealer who sold it me did an oil change)

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi

Welcome to the Forum

Most Manufacturers have so called "condition based" service programs yet most are in reality time/distance based in the cars onboard computer. With modern synthetic oils most now stretch servicing to minimum once a year some two years??

Your history shows 5 oils changes so around 20k interval (personally I do mine twice in that time) plus the other time based items (brake Fluid etc) so Yes service history looks pretty much complete.

If you are an engineer like me it is fun to tease the BMW service manager by asking him how the car measures oil viscosity and acidic content?

Basic principles should apply tempered by common sense if you are covering high miles service more regularly if lower miles a minimum of annual servicing to make sure for MOT time. I would use a BMW Specialist as costs will be more sensible.

A tip if you need to use the Warranty let the Garage talk to them as they will be well versed in what to say to get the right outcome.

Enjoy your Beemer

Thanks Dave - that all makes sense.  To be honest I think I will stick to around 10k for an oil/filter change as well.

My local BMW specialist quoted me £450 for a major service (I think it was oil, oil filter, micro filter, fuel filter and air filter) which is the same cost as having it done at a BMW main dealer locally so, when it is due, i'm not sure which one to opt for.  Does £450 sound about right for a non main dealer service ?

And I am enjoying it massively - It really brings a smile to my face every time I drive it 🙂

Morning Simon

Take advantage of the "deals" at your main Dealer £450 is a good price (my main dealer is almost £200 per hour labour so I would question exactly what is done?) and never be shy about asking for discounts (at the Dealer or the Specialist)

My Brother Inlaw is on his 4th 5 series touring 2 530d and 2 535d all have been ECU tuned, his current 2018 car is quite capable of embarrassing some high end stuff in the mid range acceleration but still gives good MPG (he has a big grin most of the time to)
