Cold Start Problems 1 Series 116i

Ive got problems with my  09 1 series cold start only. Starts from cold missing and very rough idle and black smoke out the back unburnt fuel . Plugged it in and ive got PO300-301-302-303-304 witch is cylinder misfire so in went a set of plugs the old ones were shot and well worn. The other code was P124C (Nitrogen Oxide Sensor Operating Readiness Signal Not Available At Start) so i put in a pre CAT lambda sensor. Its starts better but not 100% for sure. Its great when warm/hot. 

Has anyone else come across this problem ...

Afternoon Giles

Welcome to the Forum

I daresay the Crank Case Ventilation system will be sooted up, check all the Vacuum lines and replace if clogged. The last thing would be Coil Packs 

A diagnostic session with INPA?ISTA would tell you much more.

      105C thermostat replacement

      You are absolutely right. The strange thing is that when I put the chassis number on the realoem it shows that the temp sensor is not applicable on my vehicle. I will physically check for a sensor. In the meantime, do you think that the removal of the MAP activated thermostat will effect the temp gauge on the dial instrument item 6? I am tempted to add a dummy resistor , 11.5ohms - 13watts , to simulate the MAP thermostat. Your thoughts?

      SLIPPING CLUTCH

      Morning Andrew I normally disconnect the Neg lead only, some folks disconnect both a few even say disconnect both and touch them together. Goes without saying both sensor plugs need to be checked and a squirt of contact cleaner applied never hurts 😅 Dave

      Hi Dave, I fitted one of the sensors on the rear but it has made no effect as the light is still there, I will fit the other sensor tomorrow and see how it goes then. You mention the disconnect the battery, is there any pattern to this ? is it both leads or just the negative lead? cheers Paneuro.

      105C thermostat replacement

      Not sure what engine your running but there should be a Temp sensor in the Hose from the Rad to the water pump then there should be a Temp sensor in the housing for the Thermostat Both are shown in realoem for the 3.5 V8 I thought the V8 was the only one with dual use sensor on the Thermostat housing but stand to be corrected Dave
