Hi everybody I have a couple of questions to put to all who are wiser in these matters than myself. Im hoping someone may be able to advise me on my current situation.

I've owned a late 98 two door no sunroof techno violet m3 evo with silver vaders for the last decade. It has staggered alloys no mods except an acs back windscreen spoiler & front and back strut brace with cat back scorpion. It has about 117k miles it's a little tatty nothing major body is solid except for a little rear arch rust. Has been dry stored for the last 3 years. I was doing an oil change/engine flush to get mot on her and have over tightend the sump nut.

Not realising it was aluminium it has shredded the threads. (Gutted) should I sell the car as is? Use instant weld to show engine running, or get the sump repaired/replaced. Me and my family are quite desperate for money at the moment. And this whole situation is heartbreaking enough.

Feels like I'm losing one of my kids as it is!

Please fellow beemer lovers/experts.

Help needed badly.

You are not the first and I doubt very much the last to suffer this. Clumsy boy 😁

So a question first, have you stripped the plug? Or the thread in the sump?

If the plug is stripped cleaning the threads in the sump and a new plug should do it. If it is the sump, then a Helicoil Insert is the answer to do the job correctly you should drop the sump to ensure no swarf is left inside. BMW themselves do an insert repair kit so there is a possibility in that direction but obviously with more £ attached

You should find several Videos on the net showing how to do it. Basically run the helicoil drill through use the Helicoil tap and then insert the the helicoil insert liberally coated with thread loc 

I have also seen a repair using a slightly over size replacement sump plug which works well your original sump plug is M12 1.5 search the net for an M12 1.75 self-threading plug or ask your local motor factors which should only be a few £s and with care will solve your problem without removing the sump

Thanks so much for your speedy reply Dave much appreciated. Its actually abit worse than just the threads. A small peices of the sump came away. Pls see attached files. All suggestions welcome.

Maybe not all your fault then with that much broken away I would say it has probably been cracked for some time.

You could possibly get an engineering shop to repair it by machining the area then welding in an Aluminium block then drilling and tapping it, I would measure cost against that of either a new or replacement sump.

I think my first route would be to contact the BMW specialist dismantlers like Quarry motors (Google will help) I would also talk to BMW UK they have a Classic Section you may be surprised at the prices. I helped a guy with a 2002 a few years back they were very helpful and cost very sensible.

A quick look at www.realoem.com shows the part number as 11131748755 and the same part was used on the Z3 M
