I've looked at other forums and one in particular caught my attention. A few years back, around 2021 or 2022 I think, around 12-15 BMW owners with the same gearbox issue collectively emailed BMW AG (Germany headquarters) regarding their issues. Their cars had a mileage of around 24-74K miles and BMW AG responded by having each owner's local dealership call them and schedule for a completely free replacement of their gearbox. I was thinking if any of you might be interested in following what this group has done as this gearbox is clearly not an isolated case but more of a manufacturing defect/ quality issue.

Hi everyone!

We are experiencing the exact same issue with a 218 BMW Grand Tourer that we bought completely new from the BMW-dealership in Sweden in 2016. We got the first drive train malfunction warning after just 3500 miles (5000 km) and the BMW workshop told us that it was a faulty EGR-valvue. We have since then received numerous drive train malfunction warnings and had the ERG-valvue changed at least seven (7!) times. Now at 75 000 miles we got the warning again, the car became powerless and went in to limp mode. According to the BMW workshop the gearbox needs to be changed for a very expensive sum. My point is,  having looked around at different forums, that I don´t think that those early warnings had to do or not only had to do with a faulty valvue but also involved  the gear box. And i don´t think that the BMW mechanics were clevear enough to make that connection. So here we are, the insurance in Sweden only covers cost up to 10 years and 74 000 miles and I´m convinced that this fault has been there from the beginning, BMW wont help us at all. The intresting part is that we also own a BMW 218 Active Tourer, same gearbox, same motor, same year and mileage and we have never had a single problem (hope Í´m not jinxing it now). I have now asked the BMW workshop for the complete service history (we have done everything by the book) and the complete logbook and I`m hoping to find some evidence that this has been faulty from the beginning.

However, I´m aldo really interested in getting in contact with BMW AG to tell our story.

Yanson , do you remeber in which forum you found the information regarding the group complaint?

Thanks!

Anna

Hello all, I have just found this forum and want to tell my story and seek advice.  My husband past away last year and left me his BMW X2 2018 plate. He had it on HP with BMW finance. I took over this agreement and have 8 more months until I decide to hand it back. I have enjoyed driving the car for just over a year. Until two weeks ago when the car went into Limp mode and I was towed home by the AA. They thought it was a gear box issue. The milage is 38,000 miles, so not a huge amount. My neighbour who understands cars did a bit of research and we took it to an automatic gear box specialist. Thinking this would be cheaper than taking it to the main BMW dealer. Last week he said he was awaiting parts to come from Japan to repair the gearbox. Monday I got a quote for a new gearbox as the parts are slow coming in from Japan! The quote was 11K!!!!!! This is a ridiculous amount of money. I can buy a reasonable second hand car for that.

It seems I can drive short distances for a while, but I have lost of confidence in the car. So I'm unsure what to do, I simply can't afford to pay the monthly payments and fork out to repair a car I no longer want. The contract agreement clearly states that BMW own the car until I have fully paid off the HP agreement and the balloon payment. Is this break down of a major part their issue and not mine? Ive not been in touch with them.

I'm currently drafting a letter to BBC Watchdog, Rip off Britain for Money box.

Any advice
