Hi Everyone, hoping i can get some help here. I recently broke down in my x1 (2013) which turned out to be the oil pump. This has caused severe engine damage leading to purchasing a 2nd hand engine to replace it. Ive been trying to look on forums for evidence of the same cars having this problem, for me to put forward to my finance company. Thanks, Jack.

Welcome to the Forum

A little more information, what engine is it Petrol/Diesel 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 3.0. How many miles has it covered ? How long have you owned the car ?

I have read of Timing chain issues and Diesel lift pump issues but yours is a first for me. Any Idea what caused the oil pump to fail?

Good luck with your Finance Company

Hi Dave, so its a 2L diesel automatic. In total its done around 87k miles and i have driven about 6-7k miles in the year ive had the car. Not too sure on whats caused the oil pump to fail, i have the paperwork from the garage so will try and find their activity on fixing the car. Regarding the finance company, i think i either need to find evidence that its a theme with these cars or i need a report carried out that hopefully finds in my favour to produce to the finance company.

Thanks, Jack.

I am aware that in the early mid 2000's the N47 engines had a number of Timing chain and lift pump issues but by 2010 BMW seem to have overcome them. I have not read of any oil pump failures though.

Service history is going to be critical as part of your evidence not just "was it serviced" but was the service on time. A Forensic report on failure causes will not be cheap I fear.

Good Luck

Hi Dave. Thanks for your info it’s been great. Maybe I’ll put a line in it and move on, just didn’t know if I had any rights recovering money etc but seems I’ll need evidence or like you say, a costly report. Thanks again! Jack.

Welcome to the Forum

Sadly the only way to be sure of your engine is physical investigation, unfortunately that is costly in labour if your paying a garage as they pretty much have to strip the bottom end of the engine to investigate the pump bearings and journals. Some hard decisions ahead, have the garage rebuild the bottom end of your engine or fit a reconditioned engine and all of that measured against the cars value

Good Luck

Dave
