BMW X1 SDrive 20i carplay

Hi everyone, my friend bought a second hand, 2019 X1 a couple of weeks ago and realised it does not have carplay which is critical for her, she wants to have Ways and Google maps and other apps directly on the car's screen.

Is there a way to have it installed? Is it a hardware issue or can a change of firmware help?

Welcome to the Forum

You should be able to activate it through the Idrive system

Try this

• 1. Bluetooth and have to be turned ON on your iPhone.
• 2. In the iDrive 7 menu, press or navigate to COM – Mobile Devices – New Device – Phone calls and audio
• 3. On your iPhone’s Bluetooth menu, select the BMW entry. ...
• 4. Confirm that the PIN displayed on the iDrive 7 and iPhone match, then select YES.

Thanks! My friend has said that she has connected her iphone to the car's media system and can make and receive calls through the car's system, however the car does not possess the "carplayer" technology/module and as a result she cannot see her phone apps onto the car's in-built screen, so for example cannot use Ways or Google Maps unless she keeps looking at her phone's screen, which of course defeats the purpose. With "carplay" applications like Ways would appear onto the BMW's screen.

So as I understand it, she needs some upgrade, software or firmware or maybe hardware? She is also trying to return the car.

Oh dear "return the car" that doesn't sound good what's wrong?

I thought all Idrive after 2015/16 were set up for car play has she gone through the media set up steps? Or maybe she won't bother if she is trying to return it?
