Hi folks.
Wondering if you can help. I purchased a 59 reg 116d to travel for work. Cheap tax and 53.4mpg doing 45miles a day
Also it's a manual so had fun early morning through the b roads!

Just lately it's hesitating to accelerate from 2000-2400 rpm in 4 or 5th gear and sometimes in 3rd.
If I don't let it warm up for 5-10 mins in the morning it cuts out when I try to pull off driveway.
This morning I started it and smoke came from right side of engine bay for a minute and then stopped.
Mpg has also dropped to 44.8!

No dash lights are on!

It currently has 97k miles on it.
First pic shows some kind of leakage which is possibly oil right at the bottom of engine bay.
Any advice?

Just had a full service by service stop (don't judge me, someone recommended them over the mechanic that looks after my Benz) around 500miles ago.

I'm trying to find a local garage with diagnostic kit to take it.

Was told to try and tighten the vclamp (see photo) in case it's dripping from there and possibly losing pressure

Morning

Oh whoops, these places are cheap for a reason often using pattern part filters and low quality oils.

Tighten the clamp do an oil and filter change using good quality parts (I use Mobil  1 and Mann Filters) and see how you go.

If your Merc Mechanic uses Autolgic or Foxwell software he should be able to sort your Beemer. If not there is a Register of BMW specialists check online for the nearest to you

Good Luck

Hi Dave.

My Merc is a 1992 500SL so it uses old diagnostic tech so thatbwont be compatible.

Tried to tighten the v clamp today and bonnet won't open. Looks like the latch has no tension in it

Your not having much luck at the moment Demetrios. Do a search for BMW Specialists in your area normally they are about half the cost of BMW Dealers

You are correct!

I'm going to buy one of those connectors and software so I can do it myself because I've called two in the area and they don't return calls or emails plus they are charging £60+vat to diagnose

So it was in for MOT but they wouldn't do it because the bonnet wouldn't open so they said instead of failing it, they will refund and not start the MOT.

Asked them to check the exhaust and they said exhaust system including flexi is great.

They did find the rear drivers drive shaft boot is rotten and dripping grease onto back alloy. So they told me get that sorted before put it in for MOT.

No idea what the burning smell and acceleration hesitation could be though.

EGR?

Could one of those carbon cleans be good?

First thing is get the bonnet open so you can sort issues

As for diagnostics BMW ISTA/INPA is the best but you will need a laptop to mount it on. There are also i-Carsoft,Foxwell and Autologic that will work

Morning. So I started the 116d today and it was smoking through the right side of the bonnet and cutting out. Eventually I managed to keep it running.

I ran the bimmerlite app with Veepeak obd and it came up with error 4C9F...... Dreaded EGR

What's diff between it being closed or open?

So it passed the MOT as they took the catch apart from the bonnet, cleaned and put some proper grease on it and works great then put it through the MOT.

Minor defects both rear driveshaft boots severely deteriorated.

Should I change the driveshafts both sides completely? At least I know it's done properly? Quoted me £250 for that.

Regarding smoking and hesitation with the diagnostic he said they can do EGR delete and remap for £380

Well seems your getting there

£250 seems a good price for the drive shafts, personally I would replace the EGR valve but the choice is yours

Problem is it would be over £1000 for egr on a car I paid £2700 for as a runaround for work. Can fix all issues for under £700

A £1000 pounds for an EGR 🤣😅🤣 should be more like £80 for a new one with a warranty from one of the Automotive Factors + 2hrs to fit

Brave to take on a project like that when you are relying on others to fix it

Good Luck your almost there

Hi Dave

So took it and had the EGR removed and cleaned. Carbon build up but it's sticking to its seat in most cases.

So mechanic told me around £300 for new egr Inc fitting.

Shall I just get a new one fitted or remap and delete it for same price along with extra power?

Take care missing emission control equipment is an automatic MOT fail so removal could end up costing more than you think. I know lots of people will tell you "they can't tell" a friend of our son had EGR and DPF delete and remap great for a year then 2 garages failed it for MOT cost of replacement was almost the cost of the car.
