Hello , just picked up a 2005 plate 630i , car managed the drive home about 40 miles just fine, started and ran all was well, started the car this morning, the key light came on flashing while the car was running

After I turned off the ignition, and went to restart the car I got nothing, no illumination of the dash , no error for the key , nothing , dash does light up when you push the trip button etc , battery has  charge , everything was working fine until I turned it off.

Any ideas or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated, I do have a new key on order from BMW , just because it only came with one key which looks like it had definitely been messed with before.

Morning Rob

When you say Battery has charge what is it measuring ? It should be tested/measured at the charging points under the bonnet, engine off anything below 12.5v indicates a low/dying battery Engine running it should measure 14 +v

A low/dying battery can throw up all sorts of issues, as you have a key that you say has been messed with that also could be a cause if it isn't communicating with the EWS. Does the key lock/unlock the car ? A fault diagnosis would be the way to go

Thanks for the reply, yeah battery was tested in boot and from the jump points under the bonnet , both round the 12.4-12.7 mark , when it was running it was reading about 14.8, key fob does nothing which is why I was thinking it might be the fob , was just curious as if a dead key would stop the dash coming on when the key was turned or if it would be the ignition switch itself, the hall effect one that is attached to the barrel

Hopefully will be picking up a new key this weekend so I can at least rule that out , and it needs a new one anyway

Hi Rob

Voltage's are spot on so definately not Battery, all fuses checked and good ? A quick look at my copy of ISTA workshop information tells me you have Fuse 7  30a controls the ignition Fuse 13, 7.5a is Cluster Control Unit Fuse 41 is 5a and does the same job

it could be the key, or barrel or a no communication with the EWS module a Diagnostic scan will show where the problem is

If fuses are all OK have you tried recyncing the key incase it is that simple (you should find a guide on Google)

Good Luck

Dave

Cheers Dave ,

I'll give those all a look when am back at it, would I be right in saying those are the fuses in the glove box, hopefully going to try and get diag ran on it as soon as I can, hopefully this weekend, will post if I get a fix for it.

I had an issue similar, the remote locking and the immobiliser are two separate issues.
the dead battery in the fob won’t affect the immobiliser which is read by a benign chip in the key by the ring on the ignition barrel.
the lights on the dash should illuminate when the key is turned regardless of the engine starting.
if it doesn’t turn the dash on, I would look toward the sensor on the barrel.

do the interior lights and seats move when you get in? Is there power through the car?
when you get the car plugged into a reader, put the live data feed on and check the ews/ dme module.
when the key is inserted into the barrel, the chip should be read and the key number displayed, I think the check boxes turn green too, then the car will start. If you are getting no green lights on the programme or key numbers come up, then it’s either the chip in the fob or the chip reader on the ignition barrel.
I found this out the hard way after replacing everything including the ews and dme modules, locks, barrels and sensors…. Turned out to be a chip not being recognised, new key, new chip, programmed up and presto!

hope this points you in the right direction
