My new Dec 24 X1 has been recalled because of some problem with the wrong metal in the pillars. The dealer has had it back for 3 weeks now and still  can’t tell us what is going to be done with it, or whether we’re getting it back ! We were very pleased with it. Anyone else had this problem?

4 weeks now , dealer says BMW told them that his engineers had to drill a hole in the pillar and send them the  filings in Munich! Told us BMW said the batch this happened to totalled about 170, but we were the only one from their garage ! Getting a bit disgruntled now but don’t want to upset our dealer, been buying BMWs from them for about 40 years !

This sounds like the Dealer is the whipping boy between BMW and Yourself

Maybe write to BMW UK telling them that they have destryed your faith in the structural integrity of the car and you want it replaced

That may at least trigger some action

Thanks Dave I felt this too, we spoke to BMW UK and they fobbed us off saying they were waiting for advice on what to do from Germany! Lot of buck passing. Discussed it with an old solicitor pal and he said the law was completely with us; either replace the car or give us our money back ! Dealer says it might take another month or so ! Ridiculous situation!

Feel for you, I would put it in writing to BMW UK copy to BMW Munich state the sale of goods act and the fact the car is unsuitable for purpose and the time to correct or repair has become unreasonable. Give them a time for a solution to be reached just turn the screw

Good Luck

Dave

Wrote a letter like that to the dealer who emailed me the next day to say BMW had cleared out car. It only took them 5 weeks but we’re glad to get it back !

Glad it's finally resolved Paul

Early 2000's I had an issue with the Merc E55 Estate I owned the Fault was a recall in USA) in Europe Dealer and Mercedes said never heard of it before?? Took my car and gave me a 320d saloon they seemed to think because I was still mobile that was OK. It actually took 2 months and a legal letter and Court date before they suddenly came to life

Such a shame the big companies loose sight of their customers sometimes

Exactly I had to point out I had taken legal advice (luckily had a good pal who is a solicitor) before they took it seriously, they too gave me a rather rough 220i and seem to think that’s good enough for now !

I thought I was alone on this one.  Bought our new X1 at the end of October 2024 and received the B Pillar safety recall letter in mid February.  My X1 has been with my BMW dealer since 19th Feb and is awaiting the results of the metal analysis.  Dealer has been poor at keeping me informed, I have had to call them and request updates that have been few and far between.  When I did get to speak to a service manager, they told me that if the metal analysis comes back as suspect, they will need to replace the B Pillar safety bar on one or both sides of the car.   This could take approximately 15 hours for each side!!  This sounds to me like major structural work and has me questioning the safety of the new vehicle I was sold.  I believe that under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 we have the right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose or as described.  I am hoping that this is one of these situations and if they need to replace the B Pillar safety bars then we can request a new replacement vehicle.

Exactly what happened to me, except I bought our X1 end of Nov 24, got recall letter 10 Feb, same thing had to keep contacting dealer no help, finally said they had sent samples to BMW Munich , had to threaten legal action, suddenly got call saying our X1 was cleared and come and collect it. Dealer had the car for 5 weeks ! Have asked for some financial compensation, they actually suggested it, no word yet !

From what I have been able to learn, seems like it was only vehicles manufactured between 17th Sept 2024 and 21st Oct 2024 that may have been affected.  Our car entered the manufacturing process on 20th Sept, so I am worried that it will be one with the B-Pillar made from incorrect materials.
