Greetings all just after some advise as ive found clashing info on the net and i work away and have not got my manual with me.

Firstly is a 2001 320d se tourer turbo charged.if so how can you check if the turbo,s buggered.reason i ask,our lass has the 2002 td compact and i can hear the turbo on that and the fuel range indicator stays above 50mpg with light feathering of the throttle and returns 56mpg where as i have to be persuading on the throttle to promote forward motion if you get my drift and i return 47mpg.Obviously i will be changing oil, filter, fuel filter, and pollen filters at the weekend.

Secondly the cars done 145000 miles with bmw company car history for the first 6 years(100000 miles) but the last 5 years there is didly squat history.how much punishment can these engines take if not looked after(could well have been very well looked after but just no history however)

Thirdly would you advise doing DIY servicing if competent at this sort of millage or would you always recommend BMW servicing.

Looking forward to your input.Best regards Mal...

cant answer the turbo question sorry.

with that mileage id service myself, mines on 117k and i do mine myself.

i got mine from a car auctions and it came with pretty much no history at all. just takes a good eye to see what problems are wrong with them, mine needed a £9 sensor and a £10 coolant pipe. sorted :)

Nice and cheap repairs then.So far my steering wheel needs realigning it looks at 10 o clock/4 o clock,Tyres need repacing as they are 215/55/17 and that size is not on the sill badge but the speedo is blob and there is some vibration through the seats at 80mph so they need balancing when replaced.Electric mirrors dont work hopefully a fuse and a new rear wiper arm is required and a new battery is required

Checking the serviceability of your turbocharger.

(1) Check the condition of all the hoses to the turbo. Have any gone soft, causing them to collapse when under load.

Is there any evidence of cracking or splitting, causing leaks. Are all hose clips secure.

(2) Check intercooler for damage or blockages to the core.

(3) Check plenum chamber is sealed correctly (use soapy water in a atomiser bottle to check for leaks.)

(4) Remove the pipes to the turbo and check for excessive free play in the turbine shaft. Rotate the shaft and check

for any fouling of the turbine blades. Hold both the impeller and the turbine and try to rotate counter-clockwise to each

other to check that the shaft hasn't snapped.

(5) Is the turbo boost pressure within that specified for the unit, if not adjust wastegate. If boost pressure within spec, then

turbo is working correctly.

WARNING: Excessive turbo boost pressure WILL ruin your engine... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Google "How to check turbocharger boost pressure" for the procedure on running this test.

If boost pressure is within spec, I'd go on to check the Wastegate Valve and the Bypass. Again, do a Google and

see what it comes back with.

I hope this is of some help to you.

P.S. The usual disclaimers apply, you know; "It was broken when I got here" and "Some Big Boys did it and run away."

Simple turbo check... Run engine, open bonnet - Grasp the fat pipe from turbo to manifold - rev engine at throttle body (manually) - Does pipe get "Stiff" then relax if you let go of throttle?

Yes = Turbo ok .. Maybe hook up a boost guage for future reference...

No = Strip the turbo !!!

As for servicing... As said before, do it yourself because BMW's are very forgiving cars... But if you want your books stamped, ANY garage can stamp it, honestly.

This may sound strange but removed all covers and there was the turbo  so i know its deffinately turbocharged just can not hear it.So done bit of searching on net for common faults and came across EGR valve.found some photos of what EGR looks like.Stripped the valve and to say it was dirty was an understatement.solid crud and soot and oily residue.so loads of scapping and loads of carb cleaner and it came off ok.Refitted and took for a spin, car now drives a whole lot better at cruising speed the driving style meter thing is now in the 50,s and i dont need to be applying the throttle to encourage forward momentum. But most importantly i can feel and hear the turbo spooling now(dont know if that should have happened).Next project is to locate PC valve and clean the filter ive read about.Air filter is filthy so thats next as well, fuel filter and an oil change and hopefully ill get the book consumption figures.

Also got tyres balanced today so no more judder at 80mph

RESULT Mal :)

Totally forgot about the Exhaust Gas Recirculator LOL

My Pajero had an EGR and I took it OFF lol, ran like a dream. But when they work correctly they are worth having.

Blue smoke from exhaust is always a nice indication its fubar'd lol as per my old 306 when it sh*t a turbo

Before anyone asks thats my little brother revving the engine not me lol

Given I did have it running 24psi so it was bound to blow lol
