In one way it will help keep the ever growing cost of running a car down but if you look at the bigger picture it's going to increase the general risk of driving.

If they take that option, the actual MOT would be harder and more likely cost twice as much.

And, drivers would have a longer time-span to "ignore" defects !

I think from safety point of view the mot is a waist of time when buying a car you never know if it's a real one most people know someone that knows someone that can get a moody one unless you get it done yourself at a garage you can trust

It is all data-based now, just like insurance... So if it's dodgy and you have an accident, the car will be investigated thoroughly !

Dont get me wrong I always make sure I have proper mot as my car carries my family but even new mots can be moody small garages can issue them without actualy doing the test and charge about £70

Annual MoT tests could be a thing of the past, despite fears of an increased number of deaths and injuries, if a Government plan comes into force.

Under the new plan, new cars would need an MoT after four years; cars under ten years would only need an MoT every two years, with only vehicles over 10-years-old needing an annual check.

However, a study commissioned by the government appears to undermine this plan, saying that the move would be 'likely to have adverse road safety consequences.'

Vehicle defects account for three per cent of road accidents according to The Transport Research Laboratory, with motoring groups fearing that biannual checks will cause an extra 55 deaths on British roads every year.

With over 23 million MoT tests taking place each year, garages have also condemned this proposal, claiming jobs will be lost as repair work to get vehicles through the test will fall off.

Despite all the arguments against, apparently the Department for Transport is still keen to push ahead with these changes.

Was reading about this in this weeks 'Classic car weekly' . I say its fine the way it is. Last thing I want is some french poo wheel busting through my rear window and coming to rest in my back seats when I'm cruising up the M11. I don't trust people to maintain and look after there own cars without getting stick from the authorities
