Hi all, i have noticed recently that when i start the car up, especially in the cold, it makes a (and this is the only way i can describe it so bear with me!) quick scratching noise! it lasts about half a second to a second. if i turn the car off after the journey then start again 9 times out of ten it wont do it but if i leave the car for a while to get cold and i start it it does it again any ideas???

Hiya Dean... Sounds like metal to metal contact as my first idea...

BUT, could also be something quite simple - Try this...

When your motor is cold, have someone start the car whilst you locate that noise, hover over the engine to determine where this noise is. As it is a very short time you'll need to be on yer toes matey...

Probable causes -

- A pulley seal/bearing.

- A belt (daft as it sounds).

- Poor oil pressure.

- Cam/Crank main bearings (you would hear a "Knock" when warm tho).

- Cam/Crank end bearings.

- Starter motor.

Can I ask, does it rattle at cold-start?

cheers no it doesnt rattle when cold thats the only noise thats made ill try what you said about locating and get back to you on it, thanks. hope its nothing serious as i love the car !!

I had the same problem last week (Exact sound). Reason:

PAS belt was too tight.

Only happened when the car was cold AND on start up
