HELP ..I have a BMW x3 2.0 diesel 2006, Since i have owned this x3 the engine management light has hardly been off, the day after buying it the light came on so back to the dealer it went they said it was a sensor and it had been done but then the next day back on came the light, I again rang the place i bought it from (Moorpark Prestige cars near Kidderminster) but they got shirty so i took it to a friends garage who put it on computer & it bought up codes saying it was the mass air flow sensor so that was changed then again next day after doing a certain millage on it came again so back to the garage it went & this time it was saying a few things which were 2 x heater plugs a vacuum valve & the EGR cleaned thinking its got to be sorted now but alas on it came on again, so this time it has had a new relay plug but yes youv guessed on the way back tonight on it has come again.. The only thing i can say is the light always comes on after doing pretty much the same amount of millage....PLEASE can any one help its driving me mad and costing me a fortune......Any comments they may help at all would be greatly received...Can anyone tell me if i took it to BMW whether they can pin point the address of problem ie: broken wire or can only tell me the codes the same as a garage can....THANK YOU, Caroline

Did the garage "Clear" the fault? Or even try?

Hi This is a common problem on these X3 cars

In fairness you can not blame the dealer as i am sure they must have went down the same route as you by changing components that are thrown up on diagnosis

I have worked for BMW for years previously & the main reason for EML lights was poor grade fuel & leaving the tank run low

I really think the EML light is there to make the Stealership lots of money

Has to be a module fault !! Either the ECU (ECM) or GCM...

Certain faults can have a "chain reaction" with other components/sensors...

My advice is to make sure ALL the fluids are ok, if they are AND no gearbox issues then you are quite safe to run her as normal !!!

Hi i agree with Dabsy

check all levels are Ok & just ignore the EML unless you want to keep throwing money at it

as we all know the other options are realy expensive.post-3125-0-95054200-1330849965_thumb.jp

BMW have told us not to drive it with the light on...gone back to Garage today but not holding much hope...There has to be something wrong with it because when you put your foot on the gas it has no power then all of a sudden it goes.

Thats bollox and tell them I said so... The engine light (EML) suggest a serious fault but is often as daft as emissions (Lambda 1/2/3/4) ... Did they check?

Hi Caroline this is a long shot that you get this post as the thread is now 2 month old but I have seen this problem before, sold a E90 320d to a guy and he was back time and again with the same issues as you and just couldn't get to the bottom of it. Most diesels get run on supermarket rubbish diesel and never really get a good hard run often and mostly just potter around cities, short journeys etc and the dpf filter never gets a chance to carry out a full regen, they have to get massively hot, manifolds just get clogged with debris, diesel is just a filthy fuel.

Carry out the above advice that you have received, get the fault codes cleared then fill it with good branded fuel, find a motorway keep the revs above 2500 rpm and go for a drive 100 miles round trip, when I did this to the 320d I could see the car do the regen process on the road, the crap that was leaving the exhaust wasn't pretty but it worked, the car was running smother more responsive etc, 4 months passed and back the guy came, codes were cleared told him what to do and that has been more that a year now, he just makes a point of doing a journey every 6 weeks or so.

Hope this helps or you have maybe just got fed up and sold it.

Regards

Stephen

Hi All.

I recently I bought a BMW x3 and after driving it for a while the engine management light came on, it stayed on for a day or two and I booked it with BMW dealers for a service and then the light went off.

the dealers couldn't do much as the light was off and they said come back when it comes on again.

after doing a full service with the dealers for £443 the light came back on now.

It keeps coming on and then goes off again.

Any one who can help please as I keep thinking I got ripped off with this car as I never had a BMW before.

thanks
