Z3 E36 1.9i Sport Roadster 2002 - Engine M43TUB19 (87kW)

This shows the shearing of the steering coupling connecting the column to the steering rack. This occurred on the morning of 21st May 2012. This occurred without warning and sheared with half turn of the steering wheel.

The above photo shows the complete coupling. Note that corrosion is local to the area adjacent to the exhaust with the top part showing an area with no corrosion.

The lower photo is a closer view of the corrosion showing concentric holes and fatigue cracks on the coupling ridges.
