That could very well be a Throttle Body problem as a dirty one caused my BMW 5 series E39 and my MK5 Passat to cut out around corners. Easy to clean and PLENTY of guides to help you. Simply pull the boot from the throttle body exposing the butterfly valve and fire some solvent into it. You can hold the valve open with your other hand whilst you use a clean rag to clean the valve itself.

To jump to the conclusion of a Vanos issue (Which in its self is usually quite serious) is a silly as there are ALOT of reasons a motor can cut out. One of the symptoms (Disclaimer, NOT the only symptom) of a vanos problem is that they make alot of noise. Is your Vanos making a racket? Youtube the problem to get a feel for the sound. Try my suggestion as you CAN do it yourself and get back to us

thanks for replying, I had a garage put a computer on the car and that is what said it was a vanos problem, but no one can tell me actually what it is.... it tends to cut out particularly when changing down the gears...

so any help as to what the acttual problem is would be great thanks
