Another Audio Issue!

Hi all. I have recently purchased a e38 - 728i (2001) which I am loving had 330d before which was also cool, since I have owned the car I have had no sound and the head unit (4:3 tape unit) is completely unresponsive no buttons work at all but has picture of menu, so need help please ! I have tried the following

Updated nav software (mk3 nav unit I think)

Checked fuses and voltage which all seem ok volt is 12-13v

Removed radio module and replaced after few hrs and radio did work for a few minutes and steering wheel control worked also then it cuts out and all is lost again no other radio buttons worked apart from the streering wheel ones

I think the system has been played with as the Cd Changer is not contacted and i cannot see anyway of connecting it, it has a lot of kit in the boot, including a tm system

I am a new member and I am sure I will be helping others as I do have a good knowlage on BMWs but not on the audio system, I am in your hands!

      Hi Kristian Thanks for the update, to my thinking the fact it seems intermitent would point to a Dry Joint or a cracked/broken wire feed or track on the Ribbon Dave

      Afternoon Karl Welcome to the Forum There is a Register of BMW Specialists Google/Siri will help you should be able to locate one not to far away from you. Before spending your hard earned here are a few of things to check (1) Check Battery Voltage at the charging points under the Bonnet engine off, it should be 12.5v anything below that indicates a failing battery which can cause all your issues. (2) Check the Voltage at the Charging Points engine running voltage should be 14.5 + Volts anything lower points to an Alternator/Voltage Regulator issue (3) BMW love multiple earth points the mounting for these can often become corroded check earth continuity or simply undo the mounting bolt clean everything apply electrical contact cleaner and bolt it back Reset all Fault Codes and check to see if any come back Dave

      Instrument cluster suddenly died

      I have still not found the cause of the problem, i havent tried to diagnose it yet because lack og time, but when i was traveling in the holidays suddenly the cluster started working. But then the next time i turned the car on it didnt work. Now it has been working 20% of the times i turn the car on. The other 80 it is Dead as i described. I think this makes the problem even more complicated
