I want to read the fault code on my e36 to discover why the SRS light is on and ideally I want to do this tomorrow morning as a friend is borrowing the car for a couple of weeks tomorrow afternoon.

I do have a diagnostics scanner, 2 in fact one of which even has the BMW logo on the box, but I am aware that BMWs of this era don't use the now near enough standard OBDII diagnostics socket and I don't have the right adapter.

I was thinking if I new which pin on the car to connect to which pin of the OBDII reader I could make up an adapter in a few minutes from the endless pile of wiring offcuts in the workshop. That would hopefully allow me to read the code tomorrow rather than waiting for postage on the correct adapter.

Another quick question that may save me some hunting time tomorrow, where is the diagnostics socket located on a 1999 323 touring?
