Ive just done my first long journey in my 1998 323i touring. Due to awfull weather conditions the going leg of the trip which was the full length of the M4 was done at 50mph.

She returned an average of 35mpg this included about 25 miles of town driving whilst I was in Buckinghamshire and the very twisty and hilly roads this end of the M4. On the way back I discovered I can record to MPGs using the trip computer so had a play and discovered that the motorway section done at 70mph returned an average fuel consumption of 42mpg.

Now im certianlly not complaining about these figures they are far better than I expected but they do seem a little high and it makes me wonder if this may indicate a problem, as this car is fitted with a 2.5 6 cylinder and a 5 speed slush box. Mind I was watching that fuel consumption gauge like a hawk and would back of every time it dropped and didn't let it climb above 2250rpm that entire journey

It's above average but, should be okay

2.5 M52 Engine in an E36 is suppose to pull an average ~40MPG Motorway (Unmodified)

Yup, The power output is MORE than sufficient for the weight of the E36's chassis. Especially on the motorway
