i have a cone air filter fitted with no heat shield, surly this will make my engine run at lower power meaning lower performance,as i gather all it will be doing is sucking in hot air from the engine bay,so would it be better to fit standard air box.

Technically yes thats what itll be doing, !! get a heat shield in place or put the standard box back on with a replacement K&N filter in it,altho it wont sound as good under acceleration :)

Would it help at all just to run a cold air feed to the air filter?

If doing this and getting a heat shield made up you should be onto a winner.

Yeh this is true, probably the best way to get the most performance. Will you loose most of the induction noise though?

Suppose it depends what your after really.

ive got two cold air intakes one from the grill and one from the bumper,im going to try and make an heat shield the weekend and fit it later,to see how it works.

Pics are always good to see what ya doing :)

Although, I must add. It has been disproven time and time again that the "Cold Air Intake" theory is hogwash. You can put your cone filter outside the car or right up close to the exhaust mani, will you notice a difference in performance? Nahhhh

The only good thing about performance panel/cone filters is that it will allow the engine to breath better therefore increasing performance BUT... the temperature of the air being fed to it makes very little difference. From an engineering perspective, yes it does make a difference but for average cars like mine and yours, and yours, and yours.. it really doesn't make a difference.

Don't take every word of mine as gospel, the internet is your domain! has a look

Hope this helps,

Daz

i know exactly what you mean, unless i had a racing car the difference it would make i would not notice nor would anybody else,so now all im going to do is enlarge the diameter of the cold air feed pipes just to try and get more air to the engine. That in my mind is probably the only good thing i can do to the car.apart from the remap ive got planned.
