Engine Management Light....

hi all,

just nipped out to the shops there , when I noticed the car was chugging and the engine management light was flashing !!! any ideas??? its a 318es tourer 2004 ....

The engine management light basically is your car saying.... "Arghhh My Engine! Solve It...."

So, with that in mind it can mean anything. You say it's chugging? Is this something you Feel and Hear? Is there a noticeable performance drop when you sink your right foot? Any smoke emitted from the rear? Did it stop when she warmed up? When is the last service?

i managed to get a mate to have a wee look ....and his meter gave us the code for a faulty coil pack on number 2 .... so i need to get my finger out and get one off e-bay or main dealer....

thanks guys for your help and ideas

A coil pack makes alot of sense bud. Basically she was missing. You can change the coil pack yourself no probleeeeems

well not sure about the coil pack idea!!!got 1 today and changed it . but it made no difference....now getting fault codes

The connectors to the packs may be at fault. Swap test the packs between cylinders and see if it changes anything.

we have had the coil packs out one by one and put a spark plug in them to check for a spark ....and it seems fine ... once wee return them into position , the car still is dropping a cylinder.....the guy helping me is mystified lol :wacko:

Maybe a sensor is out messing with the ignition timing..

CPS (cam or crank) can cause this, but is it the SAME cylinder the codes are referring to? Or the same coil-pack?

How are the plugs? Are they sparking a lovely light blue? Are they oiled, white-spotted or a lovely coffee colour?

      BMW 318i boot locked can’t get into

      Update: I checked my battery and it charged in 5 minutes, so I don't have to find another alternator. All seems to be OK except for the plastic "L"s with a short rubber hose that bypass the HV/AC solenoid. Those get clogged after @ 150,000-190,000 miles (if distilled water wasn't used) and cause air pockets that try to burst radiators. I have a few more brass "L"s, so now I can throw the plastic ones away. I have to be careful I don't fog the windows though, without heat or cool.

      105C thermostat replacement

      You are absolutely right. The strange thing is that when I put the chassis number on the realoem it shows that the temp sensor is not applicable on my vehicle. I will physically check for a sensor. In the meantime, do you think that the removal of the MAP activated thermostat will effect the temp gauge on the dial instrument item 6? I am tempted to add a dummy resistor , 11.5ohms - 13watts , to simulate the MAP thermostat. Your thoughts?

      SLIPPING CLUTCH

      Morning Andrew I normally disconnect the Neg lead only, some folks disconnect both a few even say disconnect both and touch them together. Goes without saying both sensor plugs need to be checked and a squirt of contact cleaner applied never hurts 😅 Dave

      Hi Dave, I fitted one of the sensors on the rear but it has made no effect as the light is still there, I will fit the other sensor tomorrow and see how it goes then. You mention the disconnect the battery, is there any pattern to this ? is it both leads or just the negative lead? cheers Paneuro.
