We have a 2021 BMW X5 45e and are now towing an Airstream Caravel 16RB and utilize an Equal-i-zer WD hitch set up by the Airstream dealer. I really agonized over the decision to use the WD hitch. The thing that pushed me into going ahead with WD was checking with Andy at Can-Am RV, who apparently is the towing guru in the US. He assured me that there is no technical reason for BMW's prohibition on WD hitches... rather a result of European regulations and unwillingness to certify use of WD hitches for the US market. Andy confirmed that there was absolutely no engineering limitation or issue with using WD hitch on the X5 and strongly recommend that we do use it from a safety standpoint. We've take a few trips and the X5 tows the Airstream like a dream. I still don't love knowing the hitch receiver on our X5 says that WD is "forbidden", but Andy @ Can-am's expertise is hard to argue with... in addition to being an expert generally, he has deep expertise with setting up German SUV's for towing.... apparently Porsche hired him to set up the Cayenne for towing an Airstream.
