The tax disc is gone. What does this mean for me? As the paper tax disc passes into history, we look at how the changes will affect motorist across the countryFrom today you will no longer need to display a paper tax disc in your car window as records will, instead, be electronic. Here’s a guide to what you need to know about the system. What is happening to tax discs? From today, they are being scrapped so you will no longer need to display one in your car window. They have been around since 1921 but as the DVLA also keeps electronic records of who has paid vehicle tax it is a “visual symbol” of a“move into the modern age” according to the Treasury. Do I need to rip my car disc from my window right away? You can do but you don’t have to. Some people may even decide to keep theirs for posterity (or to add to a collection of tax discs). Will I have to pay more? Not unless you pay in instalments, which you will now be able to do. Instead of paying in a lump sum you can now pay monthly or in two six-monthly instalments. However, this will cost you an extra 5%. If you pay by credit card you will also be hit with a £2.50 surcharge. The option to pay by direct debit is available for people who need to tax their car from 1 November 2014. How will I remember to pay my tax? A question that is on the mind of many motorists as the tax disc has always been a handy reminder of when payment is due. The DVLA says it will still send out reminders before a driver’s tax is due to expire. If you still forget to pay you will get a warning before you are fined. Make sure the DVLA has your correct address. I am buying a car that has some time left on the tax disc. Can I still transfer this to my name? No. Under the new rules you will need to renew the tax immediately, even if there are some months left on it. I am a seller with months left on my tax disc. Will I get a refund?Yes, but not for partial months. So if you sell your car on the first day of the month (for example) the buyer will still have to pay for a whole new tax year and you won’t get any money back. You will get a refund for any other full months you have remaining. Won’t the lack of any visible tax disc lead to more tax evasion? The RAC certainly thinks so – it believes it will lead to tax evasion amounting to £167m a year. But the DVLA has dismissed this as nonsense, arguing there is no need for a TV licence to be displayed in a window but that the system is still policed. Source = The Guardian

Based on the numbers above, I've phoned the place we're eating and reserved 20 places so we won't have to wait for a table. I'll be phoning again from the services once we all meet up on Sunday morning to confirm numbers with them which they are happy to vary. Still plenty of room, come on troops, get your names down B)

Everybody, please remember that there is an admission fee to the Motor Museum. The usual price is £7 per person but Issy has secured a discount. I don't know what the discounted rate is so bargain on spending £7 pp and if its cheaper, that's a bonus. 17 cars so far so this should make for some pretty cool photo opportunities. Still loads of room if anybody fancies a nice drive and dine....

Its a shame Lee cant make it , next time maybe. Did the recce trip tonight, The timings are conservative as they were easily achieved whilst driving behind tractors and in thick fog with 30ft of visibility. Trying to drive at a pace that didn't waste time but stay completely safe was a real challenge which I really enjoyed. If its a nice clear day, we'll be in Eyemouth in plenty of time. Parking is limited in Eyemouth and is probably best kept to the spaces at the amusements and at the Co op. The "Milk Bar" I propose we eat in is just a minutes walk from the car park. Its not "The Balmoral", its an Ice Cream parlour with a chip shop attached and an inside seating area with a nice view to the rear. Issy has been in touch with the museum and they're looking forward to seeing us. Unfortunately, the museum doesn't offer tea or coffee but the carpark should easily house us all and provide a nice backdrop for some photos. Approximately 100 miles round trip from Musselburgh Services with some fantastic roads and views on the way.

An active BMW forum I'm on is organising (I'm organising) a drive and a bite to eat, everybody is welcome. The plan is to meet at Granada Services carpark just off the A1 near Musselburgh at 10:00 to leave at 10:30 heading over the Lammermuir Hills stopping at Eyemouth for about 12:15 for a coffee or a bite to eat. Leave Eyemouth around 13:15 and head to the Myreton Motor Museum for 14:00 for a look round. After that we will head home. Add your name plus number of passengers to the list if you are attending so I can let the museum know how many to expect.Attending Issy Cambell Andy & Debbie Stevie Lee Paul Gary Badwolf +1 George & Michele Shorty Michael (maybe) Pete & Diane

Sunday 7th Sept. I'd say meet at McD's at the Forth Road Bridge at 9:30 for a 10:00 (sharp) depart. According to Google, the journey to Couper Angus is 1 hour 2 minutes so this will tie in very nicely. Meeting at FRB Cambell
